Typhus is also known as rickettsia. The mode of transmission is from humans to humans and also from lice and fleas to humans. The causative organism of typhus is Gram-negative coccobacilli. Most common symptoms are a rose-colored rash and bleeding into the skin. The two main types are epidemic typhus and endemic typhus. No vaccine is available. Complications include end organ damage, gangrene and bacterial pneumonia. Treatment is done with doxycycline, tetracycline and chloramphenicol.
