Treatments, operations and tests

Anti-VEGF, 'vascular endothelial growth factor', medication is a treatment that can help stop the progression of wet AMD. This medication: - Lucentis (Ranibizumab) has to be injected into the eye using a very fine needle under local anaesthetic. This typically results in prevention of further loss of vision, and can also lead to improved vision. The patient will need to be monitored for further leakage of fluid in the eye. Eylea (Aflibercept) is also an AntiVEGF therapy and works by targeting abnormal retinal blood vessels, reducing or stopping the bleeding and leakage . This typically results in prevention of further loss of vision, and can also lead to improved vision.
Botox is a cosmetic anti-ageing procedure which involves injecting weakened strains of toxins into the tissue to impair the function of facial nerves. Botox injections are usually performed on the areas of the face that are prone to the effects of ageing, such as the outer portions of the eye, the chin, the mouth and the forehead. There is a loss of sensation and movement in the treated areas, which slows the formation of wrinkles, crow’s feet and deep furrows as a result of ageing.

A small incision is made into the eye, the cataract is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. Artificial intraocular lenses, or IOLs, replace the eye's natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. These days there are a number of different types of IOLs, all intended to serve a different medical need, such as IOLs for Astigmatism, Multifocal or Monovision and more. It is important for the patient to discuss his or her need in depth before choosing a lens. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic as a day case.
A cataract is a condition affecting the lens of the eye. The lens is situated inside the eye behind the pupil and iris. Its normal function is to focus the light to ensure we see a clear image. A cataract is present when the lens, which is normally clear, becomes cloudy. This restricts the amount of light that is able to enter the eye, causing blurred vision, dazzle and glare. A lens implant is inserted into the eye to replace the cataract. In the majority of cases no stitches are required. The operation is normally carried out under local anaesthetic. Most patients have surgery as a day case, although some opt to stay in hospital over night.
The Femtosecond Laser brings micron level accuracy, needle-free, blade-free surgery to the public and is the greatest breakthrough in cataract surgery in the last 25 years. It has the potential to carry out lens extraction or cataract surgery through a pin-prick incision and is considered safer and more superior to current cataract surgical techniques.
Restylane® is an injectable wrinkle filler which enhances your natural looks by restoring your skin's volume, creating softness and revitalizing your appearance. Restylane® is safe and natural, because it is made of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, the same substance used in Juvederm. Hyaluronic acid exists in the human body and provides volume and fullness to the skin.

Ozurdex (Dexamethasone intravitreal implant)is a steroid implant that is injected into the vitreous jelly of the eye. It is licensed for the treatment of macular oedema in patients with Diabetic Macular Oedema and Retinal Vein Occlusion if there is an artificial lens in the eye to be treated, and their diabetic macular oedema has not improved with non?corticosteroid treatment, or such treatment is not suitable for them. It is performed by a single injection into the eye, in a surgical clean room under a local anaesthetic. The implant can last up to 6 months but may need to be given again. Iluvien (Fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implants) is a steroid implant that is injected into the vitreous jelly of the eye. It is licensed for the treatment of Diabetic Macular Oedema that has not responded to other therapies, and in patients who have had previous cataract surgery. It can last up to 3 years and a repeat treatment can be given. It is adminsitered by a single injection into the eye, in a sterile environment room under a local anaesthetic.
Skin slackens with age, resulting in wrinkles and folds of loose skin, often such folds can collect around the eyes. An eyelid reduction removes the surplus skin and produces a younger, more alert and healthy appearance.

The term glaucoma means increased fluid pressure in the front part of the eye. It is a condition that affects about 1% of the population and is much more common in people who are over 50 years old. Trabeculectomy is an operation that is performed to allow free drainage of this fluid. The front part of the eye has two chambers. The first one is the space between the cornea (the transparent 'film' in the centre of the eye) and the iris which is the coloured, rounded part behind it. The open centre of the iris is the pupil. The second chamber is just behind the first and is the space between the back surface of the iris and the lens of the eye.
An Implantable Contact Lens works with the eye to correct poor vision. The lens stays indefinitely in the eye although it can be easily replaced should it need to be.
Avastin is an anti-growth factor drug used to reduce macular oedema and reduces blood vessel growth. It is performed by a single injection into the eye, in a surgical clean room under a local anaesthetic.

This typically results in prevention of further loss of vision, and can also lead to improve vision. It is licensed to treat Wet AMD, Diabetic Macular Oedema, Central and Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion and Myopic CNV Degeneration. It is performed by a single injection into the eye, in a surgical clean room under a local anaesthetic.
Jetrea (Ocriplasmin) is an agent that is able to separate the vitreous jelly from the retina, and is used to treat small macular holes and vitreo-macular traction. It is performed by a single injection into the eye, in a surgical clean room under a local anaesthetic
As people age they lose elasticity in the skin and gravity draws the skin downwards, which results in an ageing appearance. Whilst it affects people in different ways, it affects women more so as their skin is much thinner. In the 8 Point Lift procedure dermal fillers are used to restore volume to the mid face. The technique combats the soft tissue loss associated with the ageing process and offers a more complete solution compared to individual dermal filler treatments. No anaesthetic is required.
This procedure is most commonly performed for patients over the age of above 50 years old. This procedure is exactly the same as cataract surgery, but is done before cataracts form, when the lens begins to stiffen with age and causes presbyopia (the inability to read without glasses due to aging of the eyes). The lens inside the eye is exchanged using Modern Micro-incision Surgery and a new lens is inserted. The lens inside the eye is adapted to the patient's eye measurements and lifestyle. Since almost any level of long or short sight and astigmatism can be corrected, refractive lens exchange is commonly used as an alternative to laser eye treatment or other implant techniques.
There are two types of laser that are applied to the retina: Pan-Retinal Photocoagulation (PRP) laser is applied when there is a growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina, which can occur due to an impairment in the blood supply to the retina in conditions such as severe diabetic retinopathy or following retinal vein occlusion. The laser causes shrinkage of the abnormal blood vessels, thereby reducing the risk of them bleeding and causing loss of vision. Macular Laser is used when there is fluid from leakage of tiny blood vessels in the macula region of the retina. As the macula is the part of the retina that is responsible for detailed vision, any fluid that leaks into this area can lead to a loss of vision – such as in Diabetic Macular Oedema and Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion.
