Sanjay Agrawal: Profile

Mr Sanjay Agrawal is a Consultant Bariatric Surgeon & Clinical Lead of Bariatric Surgery at Homerton University Hospital in London and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Blizard Institute in Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London. He is also the clinical director and founder of Harley Street Obesity Clinic in London's Harley Street.

Mr Agrawal is Director of London International Bariatric Surgery Symposium (LIBSS).

Mr Agrawal is Editor-in-Chief for a book titled ‘Obesity, Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery: A Practical Guide’ (Springer, 2015). The book has achieved in the region of 250,000 combined chapter downloads electronically worldwide so to date. Under his editorship, a 2nd edition of this book titled ‘Obesity, Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery: A Comprehensive Guide’ was released in 2023. This 2nd edition is part of the prestigious Springer Nature’s Major Reference Works (MRW) program.

Mr Agrawal has been designated as ‘Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery’ (MSMBS) by Surgical Review Corporation of USA since 2012. Previously called ‘Surgeon of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery’ (SOEMBS) and ‘Bariatric Surgeon of Excellence’ (BSOE), this designation is regarded worldwide as a marker of quality assurance in patient care and underscores his long-term commitment to high standards of treatment. He is also a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS).

Mr Agrawal has the honour of being the first Post-CCT Fellow in Bariatric and Upper GI Surgery awarded under the National Surgical Fellowship Scheme through the Royal College of Surgeons of England in the year 2009-10. He was awarded Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) Bariatric Fellowship with Dr Bruno Dillemans in Brugge (Bruges), Belgium for 3months in 2009. He was also awarded Ethicon Short Term Clinical Visit Grant by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for the Gastric Fellowship at National Cancer Center & Cancer Institute Hospital in Tokyo, Japan in 2008.

Mr Agrawal trains other surgeons in bariatric and laparoscopic surgery and has made over 100 presentations at national and international meetings. He also has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Mr Agrawal has served as Faculty in different capacities (Chair / Moderator / Speaker / Live Demonstrator) in multiple national and international meetings.

Expertise

Mr Agrawal has undergone extensive training in the UK, Belgium, Japan and India and has completed over 1750 laparoscopic (keyhole) bariatric procedures to date. He performs more than 100 bariatric operations per year, the majority these days being sleeve gastrectomy for obesity. His outcomes are excellent, with zero patient mortality following surgery.

Mr Agrawal is also experienced in general and upper gastrointestinal surgery, including anti-reflux, gallstone and hernia surgery, completing more than 2500 such procedures to date.

Research interests

Mr Agrawal’s main areas of research interest are in obesity/weight loss surgery, in particular in investigating outcomes and complications of the surgery from a clinical perspective.
