The voice box and the vocal cords can be examined with a laryngoscopy. There are two main types: a flexible laryngoscopy and rigid laryngoscopy. A flexible laryngoscopy is more commonnly used. A laryngoscope is inserted through the nose and down to the back of your throat. The patient is asked to stick out their tongue, puff out their cheeks and take some deep breaths. This will the surgeon to view the the back of the patient's throat, voice box and vocal cords clearly on a monitor transmitted from the laryngoscopy. Common side effects are sore throat, temporary loss of voice, a stiff neck and dysphagia.
