A vaginal examination is recommended for bleeding between periods, abnormal vaginal discharge, dyspareunia and problems related to menstruation. The speculum is inserted in the vagina. Sometimes samples are also taken from the vagina and placed on a slide to study them under the microscope if any pathology is suspected.
