A Vaginectomy (or removal of the vagina) is often performed laparoscopically, if possible. However, depending on the severity and spread of the cancerous tissue, it may be necessary to progress to a Laparotomy (open surgery) to look inside the abdomen. This will also then allow the surgeon to take small samples of the lymph glands as well as the omentum (a fatty layer of tissue). However, the latter two procedures may also be performed independently and laparoscopically, e.g. a Laparoscopic lymphadenectomy and a Laparoscopic omentectomy.
