There are 3 main varieties of umbilical cord prolapse. These are overt cord prolapse, occult cord prolapse and funic prolapse. They represent an obstetric emergency because umbilical cord prolapse can compromise fetal circulation. Fetal brain damage and death can occur if it is not treated immediately. Fetal heart rate monitoring is mandatory in this condition. Management is most commonly done with emergency caesarean section. Normal delivery is attempted only if the cervix is fully dilated and there are no contraindications.
