Tularemia is an infection that is transmitted to humans from animals. It is caused by a bacterium called Francisella tularensis. This bacterium infects many animals specially mammals and birds. Humans become infected mainly through the bite of an animal, direct skin contact with the animal or by eating contaminated food. Symptoms are ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, muscle ache, fever and pharyngitis. Diagnosis depends on serology. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
