Trachoma is an eye infection caused by a bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is common in poor communities. Symptoms are a pus discharge from eyes, irritation, severe eye pain, itching, blurred vision and photophobia. Scarring of the cornea known as trichiasis is the most severe symptom which ultimately leads to complete blindness. Treatment includes environmental modifications, facial cleanliness and antibiotics. Surgery has to be performed in severe cases.
