Tonsils are removed surgically and the procedure is called a 'tonsillectomy'. It is the treatment of choice for severe tonsillitis. It is carried out under general anaesthesia. The most common technique used by ENT surgeons is cold steel surgery. A surgical blade is used to cut the inflamed tonsils. Bleeding is controlled by applying pressure or by diathermy. Possible complications are pain, difficulty in swallowing and post-operative bleeding.
