Spinal cord injury (SCI) is an injury to the spinal cord resulting in a temporary or permanent loss to its normal motor, sensory, or autonomic function. Spinal cord injuries usually begin with a blow that fractures or dislocates one or more vertebrae, bones that make up your spine. Most injuries don't cut through your spinal cord. Instead, they cause damage when pieces of vertebrae penetrate into the cord tissue or press down on the nerve that carries signals.
