PET stands for positron emission tomography. PET scans are used to produce three-dimensional images of the inside of the body. PET scans are commonly used to diagnose cancers and a wide variety of neurological conditions. They are also used to plan treatment for heart transplants. A radiotracer is passed into the body through an intravenous injection before the PET scan. The PET scanner then detects gamma waves emitted by the radiotracer.
