Partial removal of the colon is also known as a hemi-colectomy or subtotal colectomy. An incision is made and the diseased portion of the colon is removed along with a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue. The dissected ends of the colon are then joined back together. However, in some cases, it may be better not to join the the colon together again and attach a colostomy instead. There are two main types of colectomy; a partial colectomy is an open surgery colectomy and laparoscopic colectomy is a less invasive procedure.
