Hookworms are parasites that exist in contaminated soil in warm climates and where sanitation practices are poor. Larvae stay in the small intestine; eggs are deposited in the stool and passed out of the body again contaminating soil. Eggs hatch to release larvae that become mature worms these penetrate human skin. Inside the body, worms could reach the lungs and throat; coughing ingests the worms and then reaches the gut. Hookworms compete for food and nutrition in the gut and could lead to anaemia and weight loss.
