Hospitals and clinics providing High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Treatment (HIFU)

High intensity focused ultrasound treatment (HIFU) is a treatment used for localized prostate cancer. It is carried out under general or spinal (epidural) anaesthesia. The patient is asked to lie on his right side. An ultrasound scanner and HIFU treatment applicator are inserted with the help of an endorectal probe. The target area can be then be viewed and monitored. The probe emits a beam of ultrasound and the absorption of ultrasound energy increases the temperature and causes destruction of the tissue within the desired area.
