Heart murmurs are abnormal heart sounds like that of blowing or swishing. Turbulence of the blood while flowing through heart valves usually results in heart murmurs. Heart murmurs can be ‘innocent’ when they are harmless and ‘significant’ when due to some underlying heart ailment. Murmurs are often detected by a cardiologist in asymptomatic children using an electrocardiogram or echocardiogram.
