Head and neck cancers are malignancies that develop within the area of the neck and the structures found in the head. Around 90% of all the cancers in the area originate from the airways and digestive tract; these could be oral cavity cancers, cancers of the pharynx, larynx, brain tumours, salivary gland tumours, thyroid tumours, lymphomas and melanomas. The incidence of cancer increases in patients who smoke and consume alcohol. Examination of the voicbox by camera is used to look for tumours and if found, a course of chemotherapy may be necessary.
