Gallbladder removal is the surgical removal of a troublesome gall bladder. When the organ is affected by gall stones, and/or possibly growths, removal may be the best way to reduce symptoms, e.g.intense pain and jaundice or yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. ERCP can used to investigate the gall bladder before the decision to remove it is made. The gall bladder is removed by keyhole surgery by a Gastro-intestinal (GI) surgeon via small incisions for the laparoscope. If open surgery should be necessary, a much larger incision will have to be made to be able to reach and remove the gallbladder.
