It is licensed for the treatment of macular oedema in patients with Diabetic Macular Oedema and Retinal Vein Occlusion if there is an artificial lens in the eye to be treated, and their diabetic macular oedema has not improved with non‑corticosteroid treatment, or such treatment is not suitable for them. It is performed by a single injection into the eye, in a surgical clean room under a local anaesthetic. The implant can last up to 6 months but may need to be given again.

Iluvien (Fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implants) is a steroid implant that is injected into the vitreous jelly of the eye. It is licensed for the treatment of Diabetic Macular Oedema that has not responded to other therapies, and in patients who have had previous cataract surgery. It can last up to 3 years and a repeat treatment can be given. It is adminsitered by a single injection into the eye, in a sterile environment room under a local anaesthetic.
