A Cystectomy is the surgical removal of the bladder. This can be a radical cystectomy, which means removal of all of the bladder plus surrounding lymph nodes and possibly surrounding affected organs. A partial cystectomy is the removal of only part of the affected bladder. Some cystectomies can be performed laparoscopically, i.e. minimally invasive surgery. If a radical cystectomy is the only option, then the surgeon will construct a new and substitute reservoir to collect the urine and the patient may have to pass the urine through the thin catheter.
