The transparent part of the eye in front of the coloured disc (‘iris’) is called the ‘cornea’. Injuring the eye, infections, poorly fitting or dirty contact lenses can scratch (‘abrasion’) the cornea thus injuring it. Antibiotics are prescribed for infections, along with pain relieving eye drops. A temporary patch can be applied over the eye to prevent further damage.
