This procedure is used to visually examine the rectum and the sigmoid colon for malignancies, growths, abnormal conditions, ulcers, obstruction and perforation. Sigmoidoscopy is carried out by a colorectal surgeon or gastroenterologist when there is bleeding or severe pain in the rectal area and the sigmoid colon. A colonoscopy or rectum examination by camera may also be performed.
