When the bowel (‘coeliac’) develops inflammation after eating food containing gluten (a kind of protein) it is known as coeliac disease. Only those people who have abnormal genes that result in the body’s own immune system attacking the gut have this problem. The bowel is attacked because the defective immune system mistakes it for gluten to which it is allergic. In adults, pain, diarrhoea, swelling, tiredness and weight loss may occur. Such patients should avoid gluten containing foodstuffs like wheat, barley, breads, pasta, cakes, and some cereals.
