It is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. Chlamydia is a bacteria which infects the womb (‘uterus’), or part of the uterus that opens in to the vagina (‘cervix’), causing vaginal bleeding or discharge, pain in the lower abdomen during sexual intercourse and pain when urinating. In males, the tube (‘urethra’) carrying urine to the penis is affected which causes pain whilst passinging urine. Eyes, throat and lungs can also be the sites of infection.
