A cervical smear, or HPV cancer screening test, is performed to detect the presence of abnormal cells in the cervix. This is a routine examination that all women should undergo yearly to help in the detection of early cervical cancer. A s swab or a small brush will collect a specimen from the cervical walls. The specimen will be tested in a laboratory and the result will be available after a few days.
