Part of the womb (‘uterus’) where it opens into the vagina is known as the cervix. The most common reason to develop cancer in this region is infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Having multiple sexual partners at a younger age may be the source of infection. Smoking can also contribute to it. Affected women complain of bleeding between periods or just after sex, and women who no longer menstruate may notice bleeding. There can also be a foul-smelling discharge from the vagina.
