Bronchiectasis refers to the permanent widening (‘ectasia’) of the lumen of the large airways (‘bronchi’). Also these abnormal bronchi produce excess mucus which is a slimy fluid expelled out of mouth and nose. Bacteria can readily grow in this mucus and thus cause infection. Such a person coughs repeatedly expelling enormous amount of mucus. Lung exercises, antibiotics and very occasionally surgery is required to treat this illness.
