Autoimmune Haemolytic Anaemia (AIHA) is a group of disorders in which the body’s own immune system attacks the red blood cells by tagging them with markers known as anti-bodies, making them vulnerable to destruction when they reach the spleen. Usually the cause for AIHA cannot be found, but in some cases it co-exists with other diseases like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, or can occur due to certain drugs like penicillin. The patient may have no symptoms if it is mild, while moderate to severe variants can result in breathlessness, fatigue, pale skin, yellowish skin (‘jaundice’) and an enlarged belly.
