Appendix removal, or appendicectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to remove the appendix. Infection or trauma to the appendix inflames it, causing it to swell and, eventually, burst. Removal prevents bursting of the appendix and releasing toxic matter into the body. The patient is placed under general anaesthesia during the procedure and may remain in hospital for a few days.
