This refers to an injury to the ankle ligament(s). Ligaments are structures that connect bones to other bones. A sprain is caused by excessive inward or outward movement of the foot. The patient shows symptoms of pain and swelling in the ankle. In minor tears the patient is given rest, an ice pack is applied, the ankle is compressed and the foot is elevated. For major tears a surgical approach is indicated.
