Ankle fusion operation is a surgical procedure that joins the main bones of the ankle, usually the tibia and the talus. This is to reduce pain that the two joint surfaces produce because of inflammation. To determine whether the procedure is necessary, an MRI scan or x-ray is carried out. Usually the joints are fused using screws but there are new techniques that orthopaedic surgeons may use. Recovery may vary according to the technique of ankle surgery that a surgeon uses and usually physiotherapy is needed as the person recovers.
