Treatments, operations and tests

Baclofen pumps provide a permanent supply of baclofen in small doses to the spinal fluid, increasing the therapeutic benefits and lessening side effects. The treatment requires first, a test of baclofen exposure on the spinal fluid to ensure it treats the spasticity appropriately. Once that has been performed, the pump can be implanted (with a general anaesthetic) under the abdominal muscles with a catheter run to the spinal column.
Aneurysms in the brain's blood vessels do not always require treatment and there are several options available. Endovascular coiling involves the insertion of a catheter into the bloodstream at the hip, the catheter travels up the body to the brain and is directed into the aneurism. Coils are then squeezed into the aneurism, sealing it off from the blood vessel and preventing blood flowing in the aneurism. The technique is minimally invasive and most patients can go home the day after the surgery.
Aneurysms in the brain's blood vessels do not always require treatment and there are several options available. Microsurgical clipping uses a small metal clip to prevent blood flowing into the aneurism. This surgery, requires a craniotomy, the surgical removal of part of the skull and is performed under general anaesthetic.
Brain surgery can be required for a number of different procedures and provides access to the brain tissue. Surgery involves removing a small flap of bone before the intended procedure is performed. Scans and use of endoscopes allow the surgeons to minimise the amount of bone removed. After surgery, the bone flap is replaced with small metal plates, sutures or wires, though some surgeries will not replace this flap to relieve pressure on the brain.
Carpal tunnel surgery can usually be done on a day case basis. The operation may be done using an endoscope, a thin flexible telescope that is inserted into a small cut in the wrist. Images are transmitted to a screen, allowing the surgeon to see inside the wrist. In a more traditional, open operation, a longer cut is made in the palm of the hand. The endoscopic repair leaves a smaller scar, and usually allows people to get back to their usual activities more quickly. However, there may be a slightly higher risk of nerve damage with endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery
A herniated cervical disc occurs when the discs between the vertebrae weaken or even rupture. In many cases a herniated cervical disc will recover without surgery after rest of prescription drugs, surgical intervention removes the part of the disc which is pressing on the nerve.
Hydrocephalus is the build up of fluid in the brain, the most common treatment is shunting. Hydrocephalus shunting involves the implantation of two catheter and flow control value system to drain the excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain.
Hydrocephalus is the build up of fluid in the brain, an alternative method to the more common shunting is the use of endoscopic third ventriculostomy. In this procedure a hole is opened up within the brain to re-establish the effective flow of cerebrospinal fluid. It requires a far smaller hole in the skull than a shunting implant and can take as little as thirty minutes.
A discetomy is the surgical removal of a herniated disc, the procedure is an invasive procedure where the central portion of the intervertebral disc is removed by a surgeon.
A lumbar laminectomy is also known as an open decompression and typically performed to alleviate pain caused by neural impingement that can result from lumbar spinal stenosis. A condition that primarily afflicts elderly patients, spinal stenosis is caused by degenerative changes that result in enlargement of the facet joints. The lumbar laminectomy is designed to remove a small portion of the bone over the nerve root and/or disc material from under the nerve root to give the nerve root more space and a better healing environment
