Treatments, operations and tests

Aneurysms in the brain's blood vessels do not always require treatment and there are several options available. Microsurgical clipping uses a small metal clip to prevent blood flowing into the aneurism. This surgery, requires a craniotomy, the surgical removal of part of the skull and is performed under general anaesthetic.
Brain surgery can be required for a number of different procedures and provides access to the brain tissue. Surgery involves removing a small flap of bone before the intended procedure is performed. Scans and use of endoscopes allow the surgeons to minimise the amount of bone removed. After surgery, the bone flap is replaced with small metal plates, sutures or wires, though some surgeries will not replace this flap to relieve pressure on the brain.
Gamma Knife surgery is used to treat benign and malignant conditions affecting the brain, head and neck. It uses precision delivery of radiation to the abnormality, which has been identified by scanning techniques. Gamma Knife surgery is non-invasive, relatively painless and doesn't produce the same debilitating side effects as chemotherapy.
A discetomy is the surgical removal of a herniated disc, the procedure is an invasive procedure where the central portion of the intervertebral disc is removed by a surgeon.
