Johan Witt

Training and experience

Mr Johan Witt graduated from The Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1983 and undertook his specialist orthopaedic training in London with a year as a senior resident at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He completed his training with fellowships in Sydney and in Bern with Professor Rheinhold Ganz, the pioneer of hip joint preservation surgery.

Mr Witt was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to University College Hospitals in 1995. He leads the young adult hip unit which is a tertiary referral centre seeing patients from all over the UK.

Expertise

Mr Witt has a specialist expertise in hip preservation techniques, including periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) for hip dysplasia, arthroscopic and open surgery for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and hip replacement surgery. He has extensive experience in total hip replacement, including in young adults and children, and is a proponent of the less invasive Direct Anterior Approach (DAA).

Mr Witt has the largest experience of periacetabular osteotomy surgery in the UK and has developed a minimally invasive technique to perform this surgery. He lectures at educational meetings and surgical courses nationwide, raising the profile of the problem of hip conditions in younger people and how to treat them.
