Training and experience

Mr Robert Marston qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London in 1985. As one of ten students to gain an intercalated degree place during undergraduate training, he was awarded a BSc (Hons) in Anatomy in 1982.

Mr Marston was a houseman at St Thomas’ and St Peters in Chertsey before taking up a full-time lectureship in Anatomy at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington whilst doing the primary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). After working in Accident and Emergency at St Mary’s, he undertook his basic surgical training at the United Norwich Hospital group.

In 1990 Mr Marston was appointed as a Higher Surgical Trainee on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital/Middlesex Hospital Training Scheme. During this time, he was a Johnson and Johnson research fellow for Professor George Bentley and Zimmer Fellow to Mr William Muirhead-Allwood. He was also awarded a British Orthopaedic Travelling Fellowship to the United States and Queensland, Australia.

Mr Marston was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to St Mary’s Hospital/Imperial College in October 1995. After 20 years in the role, including the last seven as head of North West Thames Surgical Training, he went into full-time private practice in 2016. Initially based at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth where he was head of the Hip and Knee Units and ran the Trauma Unit, he is now based at King Edward VII’s Hospital in Marylebone, the only hospital in the UK to invite its consultants.
