Training and experience
Mr David Cumming graduated in medicine from Glasgow University in 1999. His specialist orthopaedic training in the East of England included three years of spinal surgery. He then extended his expertise and surgical skills on a Spinal Fellowship at The Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.
Mr Cumming was appointed as a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at Ipswich Hospital, East Suffolk & North Essex NHS Trust in 2011. He was Clinical Lead for spinal and musculoskeletal services in Ipswich for five years, developing the service into one of the UK’s leading orthopaedic hub spinal centres.
As well as his busy clinical practice, Mr Cumming plays an important role in the management and political aspects of musculoskeletal services and spinal surgery. He has worked with NHS England to develop best practice in spinal surgery nationwide and is Chair for the Spinal Services Clinical Reference Group for NHS England. He is also Chair of the East of England Regional Spinal Network and President-Elect for the British Association of Spinal Surgeons.

Mr Cumming’s research interests include the role of enhanced recovery in spinal surgery, the rate of persistent post-operative pain and on-going healthcare cost following spinal surgery and patient-related outcomes to fusion techniques for spondylolisthesis.
