A heart bypass graft (CABG) is a surgical procedure used to treat coronary heart disease. It is necessary when arteries become occluded (blocked)and are no longer able to pump oxygenated blood to the heart muscle efficiently. This also causes pain such as angina. This surgery involves removing a blood vessel from one area of the body and it is then attached to just above and below the blocked coronary artery. This achieves a 'bypass' of the blocked artery and restores blood flow to the heart muscle.
