In vitro fertilization is the fertilization of an egg with a sperm in a laboratory situation. An ultrasound guided needle is then used by an infertility specialist to remove an egg from the woman’s ovaries whilst she is under general anesthesia. This egg will then be mixed with the sperm and cultured in the laboratory. When it has reached the embryo stage, it is then implanted into woman's uterus. It is contraindicated for women over 42 years of age.
